With its Alpine peaks and valleys, sprawling cobblestoned piazzas, dumplings for one meal and risotto for another, road signs in German and Italian…you might find yourself wondering where am I? a few times on a visit to South Tyrol.  It’s unlike anywhere I’ve ever been before. You really feel like you’re in two countries at once!

Where to eat: Imagine a German/Austrian version of River Cottage crossed with an Italian nonna and you’ll have some idea of how delicious, fresh, comforting and well-made the food is in South Tyrol. It’s a curious fusion of two different cuisines that really works. You get everything here, from slick and modern places where every dish is Instagram-able to the more laidback places serving hearty simple fare. You will not go hungry, whatever your preference.
