“Think global, act local!” has become a more relevant slogan than ever before, affecting also the quality of design and communication. In a rapidly changing and diversifying world, design works as a catalyst of change, involving a multitude of factors. Local individuals and groups communicate and network globally, giving rise to a local-global dynamic – the Glocal. To discuss how design can handle the challenges of a globalizing yet more and more individualizing world, experts from a diverse array of disciplines have shared their experiences and thoughts on this matter. Looking at good practices of promising initiatives at the local scale makes it clear: Progress beyond rhetoric is possible! Alternative practices of production, consumption and living that cause less damage to the environment and its people are successful!
